The discipline of master data management (MDM) becomes even more critical and complex within a modern data environment. Without robust MDM, organizations risk falling into “scaled chaos” or creating an “over-engineered data silo” due to duplicated, inconsistent, or poorly controlled master data. McKnight’s benchmark study explored the time, effort, and financial implications of building MDM capabilities within fabric using a DIY approach versus leveraging a purpose-built MDM platform. This webinar will evaluate four scenarios (proof of concept, scaled chaos, over-engineered data silo, and enterprise-scale MDM) across various project sizes.

The analysis reveals that tools deliver significant cost and time advantages over DIY solutions. Projects show a total cost of ownership (TCO) that is 50% to 75% lower over three years compared to DIY. Tools also dramatically accelerate time-to-value and result in an overall effort reduction of 77%, with significant savings in areas like entity resolution (81%), data stewardship UI (80%), and workflows (71%). This indicates that while DIY may suffice for small proof of concept projects, MDM platforms are essential for achieving enterprise-scale data quality, governance, and scalability, ultimately making the data vision real.
